Megan Rapinoe — who else? — gives U.S. 1-0 lead in World Cup final

Of course it was Megan Rapinoe.

Of course.

The same Megan Rapinoe who became a flashpoint for saying, pointedly, that she wouldn’t visit the White House — which drew a return volley from the Tweeter in Chief.

The same player who so eloquently told us what it means, for her, to be an American. Who missed the game against England but fought through a bum hamstring to start in today’s World Cup championship game against the Netherlands.

And then the 34-year-old gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead from the penalty spot early in the second half.

Just pure brilliance. A little shrug sent goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal — who to that point had been perfect — to her right while Rapinoe kicked the ball to the left. It was everything we’ve come to expect from her: calm but confident.

That was her 50th goal for the national team, too.
