Megan Core finds sense of home in being Lost In Mayfield

NOSTALGIC: Megan Core's new single Lost In Mayfield deals with feelings of home and belonging.

MEGAN Core isn't the first person to get lost driving around the suburban streets of Mayfield, but she's probably the first to turn the frustration into a song.

The indie-folk singer-songwriter might have left town for Cabarita Beach near Tweed Heads earlier this year, but Newcastle remains very close to her heart.

Her second single Lost In Mayfield, out on August 21, serves as a love letter to her time in the city.

"With a few other things going on in my life and the context of where I was, it turned into more of a song about what gives people a sense of home and about community, friendships and relationships," Core said.

The 24-year-old wrote the song a couple of months before leaving Newcastle and recorded the track at Carrington's Novotone Studios with Sean Cook.

Funnily enough Core never actually lived in Mayfield and the song name checks Bull Street in Cooks Hill where she used to live. However, Core regularly visited a friend in Mayfield and has performed the song at the suburb's premier music venue, the Stag and Hunter Hotel.

Lost In Mayfield will serve as the first part of a double release. On August 28 Core will drop her third single Caffeine Fix, which she promises will be her heaviest yet, both musically and lyrically.

"It's about checking in on your friends and family, talking things through," she said.

"It's about that openness of talking about mental health - which is a lot more common now than is used to be - and encouraging that."

SECOND DAVE SHOW

NEWCASTLE rockers dave the band will perform a second album launch show at the Cambridge Hotel following strong ticket sales.

The debut album Slob Stories from the three-piece of Noah Church (guitar, vocals), Gabriel Argiris (drums) and Max Tuckerman (bass), will be released on August 28 the same day as the Cambridge shows.

The second show will kick-off at 6.30pm, before the original gig begins at 9pm.

Both shows are seated and capped at 100 people to observe social distancing restrictions.

NO TRIVIAL PURSUIT

THE return of music trivia to the Cambridge Hotel proved a winner on Wednesday night with tables selling out in advance.

Newcastle-based songwriter and producer Amos Wellings, aka Skyepaint, hosts the weekly rock'n'roll trivia night.

THIRSTY FOR MORE

AFTER the success of the eight Lime Cordiale shows and the double duty from Grinspoon's Phil Jamieson, the Cambridge has landed another big Australian act for a seated show.

Thirsty Merc frontman Rai Thistlethwayte will perform 6.30pm and 9pm shows on Saturday, August 16. Both gigs are capped at 100.

EXTRA HUSSY

NORTHERN Rivers blues and roots duo Hussy Hicks have announced a second dinner show at the Stag and Hunter Hotel for next Thursday, August 13.

Vocalist Leesa Gentz and guitarist Julz Parker are regular visitors to the Mayfield hotel and sold out their dinner show for August 14.
