Meet Vitor Matos - Porto coach set to join Liverpool who could be new Pep Lijnders

Porto coach Vitor Matos is set to join Jurgen Klopp's coaching staff at Liverpool.

The ECHO understands the Reds are in advanced talks to bring in the Portuguese and expect a deal to be completed soon.

Matos will act as a bridge between the club's academy and first-team squad and help the most talented starlets in Liverpool's ranks develop.

And as he gets set to arrive at Anfield, here is all you need to know.

What's his role?

Matos will be Liverpool's elite development coach.

The job was previously performed by Pepijn Lijnders before he was promoted to assistant manager by Jurgen Klopp following the departure of Zeljko Buvac.

Lijnders was the key link between Liverpool's Academy, currently based at Kirkby, and Melwood. He would bring through talented youngsters to train alongside Liverpool's first-team to allow Brendan Rodgers and then his replacement, Klopp, to get a closer look - a system that saw Trent Alexander-Arnold promoted to the first team.

What's his CV like?

Matos is a man Lijnders knows well, having once worked alongside him at Porto. Still relatively young for a coach, at just 31-year-old, he joined the Premeira Liga champions in 2011.

He has enjoyed two separate roles with the Portuguese club, working as both a scout before taking on the role of assistant manager for the B team.

In 2016 he made the switch to Chinese club Shandong Luneng Taishan but returned to his homeland and former club Porto two years later.

What are his qualifications?

Matos holds the UEFA Elite Youth A License qualification and has a Masters in physical education while also being able to speak Spanish and English fluently.

With talks with Liverpool progressing well, the appointment could be confirmed before the end of the week.
