Meet the woman aiming to visit 60 bingo halls before she turns 60

A woman is aiming to raise thousands of pounds for charity as she passes the midway point in a 3,500-mile nationwide tour of Britain's bingo halls.

Yvette Price-Mear, 59, has made it her task to visit 60 Meccas before her 60th birthday.

So far she has clocked up 2,378 miles with her dabber, playing in cities including Glasgow, Hull, Scarborough, Blackpool, Kent, Doncaster and Chester.

Since she began the seven-month fundraiser in June, Ms Price-Mear has collected £349 in winnings from 27 games and £3,992 in donations.

She said: "Bingo is becoming more popular with the younger generation with music, quizzes and entertainment.

"I love it, I have two vices: bingo and white chocolate. I try and go once a week. It is a place as a lady you can go on your own and it's a nice atmosphere.

"However, I do not plan to do any more tours – I think this will be my final one. But it's been so much fun."

Ms Price-Mear, of Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire, is being driven to the bingo halls by her supportive husband Tony, 59.

Her journey began in Glasgow on June 25 and it will end in Morden, Surrey, on her birthday – December 19.

She has been playing up to three times a week as she attempts to reach the milestone, which also marks Mecca's 60th anniversary.

Ms Price-Mear, who provides respite care for adults with learning disabilities, is raising money for the Carers Trust, a local scout group and Pet Bereavement Support, which she founded in 1993.

She previously completed a similar week-long event around the Midlands.

She added: "In seven days we visited 14 clubs and I then joined a Facebook group of Mecca managers earlier this year.

"They put an appeal out for ideas to celebrate Mecca's 60th anniversary. I thought it's my 60th birthday and their 60th anniversary, why not go on tour?

"That's what I have done and it's been great fun.

"I've had some incredible experiences and have met wonderful people along the way.

"The most we raised one club was in Stoke-on-Trent where we made £485.54. People have been so generous and we're really grateful for all the support."

A Mecca spokesperson said: “We’re thrilled to be working with Yvette on her amazing Mecca Bingo-a-Thon.

“She has been a bingo fan for over 30 years, so we can’t think of a better way to celebrate both of our 60th birthdays."
