Meet the Tynemouth runner who is one of the faces of the London Marathon 2019

A runner from Tynemouth has become one of the faces of this year's London Marathon - before it has even started.

Amy Lea, 33, completed the 26.2-mile course in the capital in 2018 and was snapped on The Mall jubilantly heading to the finish line.

The ITV Tyne Tees reporter and presenter then got the shock of her life when her celebratory photo was used to promote the London Marathon 2019.

She said: "It has come much to the amusement of my friends and family. I couldn't believe it. It perfectly captured the emotion of the occasion - the sweat and tears and exhaustion and elation.

"The picture has been made into a meme and a header for the London Marathon Facebook page. It has been used on Instagram - even with it's own hashtag - and on the official event page (also on Facebook) and it pops up on Twitter every few weeks.

"It gave me goosebumps just seeing that moment captured."

Amy, who will tackle the London Marathon for a second time on Sunday, April 28, said she can't wait for the big day.

She said: "It is incredible. The atmosphere, the fellow runners, the noise from the crowds. People say doing a marathon is life changing - and it is. It sounds daft but you kind of feel invincible afterwards.

"The training has gone really well apart from one hiccup in the middle when I had a nasty fall and bust my hand, knee and face open near a bus stop in Whitley Bay. Thankfully I've recovered and I feel ready to take on the marathon once more."

Amy, who is aiming for a time under five hours, has managed to keep to a strict no-alcohol policy since the start of 2019 but admits she's looking forward to a drink after the run.

She said: "I'll be ready for a celebratory glass of fizz on the train home to help my aching legs.

"I tell anyone who'll listen about the power of running and I believe anyone can and should give it a go - any size, shape, age, background - just take it at your pace.

"I am a slow and steady runner and will find myself at the back of the field with people dressed as rhinos and dinosaurs - but that's why I love it - you get to meet so many characters and hear some amazing stories."
