Meet the "superstar" lawyer that Mike Ashley hopes will seal Newcastle United takeover

Mike Ashley hired a "superstar" lawyer to spearhead Newcastle United's anti-competition claim against the Premier League.

With arbitration being looked after by Nick De Marco, the case which will take place in the Competition Appeal Tribunal court will be looked after by Daniel Jowell QC.

In the case, Ashley is hoping that deeper questions of the Premier League's performance during his collapsed sale of United will be asked after he watched on as his £340million deal with Amanda Staveley, the Reuben brothers and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund fell through.

In short QC Jowell's task will be to show in no uncertain terms that top-flight officials prevented Newcastle competing with the Premier League's big boys.

The Brick Court Chambers website states that the silk is deemed as an expert in competition cases and reads: "Daniel has an academic background in both EU law and economics.

"He has appeared in a number of the landmark competition law cases of recent years, with particular experience in numerous cartel damages actions."

Describing the lawyer, the website goes on: "After obtaining a first class degree in PPE at New College, Oxford, a Frank Knox scholarship to Harvard University and an LLM at the College of Europe (Bruges), Daniel Jowell was called to the Bar in 1995.

"A tenant at One Essex Court from 1996, he joined Brick Court Chambers in 2005.

"He was appointed to silk in 2011."

The Legal 500 described him simply as: "Up there with the best" in 2020, while they said this year: "Exceptionally intellectually able and great at distilling complex arguments into the essential points."

It was the same publication who'd said he was a "A superstar in the making," five years earlier.

Meanwhile, Chambers and Partners describe him as: "He's one of the best competition silks around.

"He's highly intelligent, has a fantastic manner when dealing with clients and the court and is a pleasure to work with."

And they also said: "Daniel has the court's confidence when he delivers his arguments and is good at winning the bench over."

As Newcastle's wait for a breakthrough in the transfer market in the football world goes on, Ashley will hope that Daniel Jowell could be his most important signing yet at St James' Park.
