Meet the people who were first through the doors at Ashton Gate's mass coronavirus vaccination centre

Key workers from North Somerset say they feel "privileged" to be among the first through the doors at Bristol's mass vaccination centre.

Health and care workers were one of the priority groups to have been given coronavirus jabs at the new Ashton Gate 'super vaccination centre', which opened this morning after weeks of preparations.

Sue Jones, from Clevedon, a retired nurse who has recently returned to the profession to help with the coronavirus effort, was among the first to arrive.

Addressing press afterwards, she said: "It was amazing, very quick and smooth - I'm very pleased to have the vaccine, I think it's a game changer.

"It's going to change people's lives, it's obviously going to take time but I'm absolutely delighted to have it."

The 57-year-old said she had to shield during the first lockdown, and she will be "pleased to play a bigger part" in the COVID-19 effort once she has gained some immunity to the virus.

She urged people to follow the lockdown rules to ensure people can stay safe while the vaccine roll-out continues.

'Very well organised'

Roslyn Wlaznik, 51, a domiciliary care manager from Portishead, discussed the process of arriving and proceeding through the centre.

She explained: "I arrived at the front entrance and they asked if I had any symptoms and how did I feel..

"They took me through to the first bank of desks and booked me in and took my details.

"There were lots of information leaflets and information on symptoms I might get, basically lots of self-help information. You go to a little cubicle and there was a nurse who went through some more information with me to book me in properly.

"She asked me a bank of questions to ask if I am well and once you have done that they take you through to the waiting areas. There were a couple of people in front of me. I wasn't waiting more than four-five minutes."

The key worker said the process was "very very well thought out and very well organised".

She added: "It's very safe, very straightforward to go through. I don't feel there's anything to be anxious or apprehensive of.

"The experience I had just now, I don't think they could make the process any safer."

Jacqueline Corney, from Portishead, was also one of the first to have the Oxford jab in Bristol.

She said she was "over the moon" to receive her first dose, adding: "I think it’s brilliant. It was very efficient. I’m looking forward to being able to go and see my mum, who is in her 80s and not worry. And my eight year old grandson.

“I see my mum sometimes as I’m in her bubble but it’s a bit scary. My grandson I haven’t really seen for three or four months since the summer really."

The social care worker said she feels "privileged", encouraging others to take up the offer of the vaccine if they are invited to have it.

She continued: "There are lots of people in there and they all know what they are doing."

The 56-year-old said she stressed the need for people to follow lockdown rules and "pay more attention".

She added: "There are lots more people out and about and not social distancing like they were before.

"We only have a little while longer to go with this. We’ve only got to follow the rules for a short time.

"Then we’ll get the vaccinations and go back to normal hopefully."
