Meet the only Manchester United fan who is happy Liverpool won the league... because he bet his inheritance on it last year - now he's won a small fortune

He may be a Manchester United fan... but he changed his allegiances when it came to betting his life inheritance.

Tony Ward put an eye-watering £55k bet on Liverpool to win the Premier League.

But while that seems like an obvious decision considering they were miles ahead of their opponents and won the 2019/2020 season with matches to spare, the 53-year-old actually made the brave decision back in October.

Tony, from Bradford, West Yorks, risked the double-figure sum which he received as part of his inheritance when his mum, Rose, died in 2017.

Not even a supporter of The Reds, he simply thought they looked a better bet than rivals Manchester City - and lumped on at 4/6.

And after months of waiting after the coronavirus lockdown prevented Liverpool from picking up the title earlier on, the dad-of-three's confidence finally paid off.

On June 25, after lockdown was lifted, Tony secured a staggering payout of £91,666.66.

"I fancy a big holiday at some point. The rest is for a rainy day, Tony said of his win.

"Liverpool were always looking like they could win the title. I picked them after a long, long debate.

"It was a two-horse race between them and Manchester City, as far as I was concerned.

"I'm an armchair supporter, really - I've actually been fan of Manchester United since I was a kid!

"[Mum] wouldn't have minded what I did with the money - not at all. She liked a flutter! She liked the horses.

"But I'd give it all back to still have her around. I cherished her."

The United fan added that despite his luck, he's going to stay away from the bookies for a while and has no plans to reinvest some of his winnings.

He said: "I certainly haven't got any plans to put another bet on for that money again. I won't dive in.

"I don't bet just £5 or £10. I won't just do it willy-nilly!

"I've always liked a flutter - especially when I was younger - but I've tried to be good over the last few years.

"I only bet when I really feel it. I pretty much knew when I stuck the bet on that Liverpool were going to do it."

A spokesperson for Ladbrokes said: "Liverpool won the Premier League with ease in the end and delivered the goods for our confident customer."
