Meet the North Shields teen who hopes to follow in footsteps of England Lionesses

The England Lionesses have romped their way to the semi-finals of the World Cup - now a Tyneside teenager wants to follow in their footsteps.

Jessica Brown has been selected in the England Lionesses Under 16s team and will be travelling to Sweden next week to play in the Nordic Cup.

The 15-year-old, from North Shields, has just finished her GCSEs and plays for Sunderland and Gateshead Regional Talent Club.

Now she is looking forward to representing the country on an international stage.

She said: "We have three games - we play Sweden, Holland and Finland.

"I'm nervous obviously but more excited. Every time you represent your country, it's incredible."

Jessica, a former pupil at John Spence Community High School and Preston Grange Primary School,  says she started playing football when she was about five.

"My brothers have always played football so I've just followed in their footsteps," she said.

"I played for North Shields Juniors. I played for a boys' team until I was about 13 and then I joined North Shields Juniors Girls' team, and shortly after that I joined Sunderland.

"When I joined Sunderland was really when I started focusing on it properly and taking it more seriously.

"If it wasn't for my mum and dad I wouldn't be in the position I am because they drive me all over the country, they come out and watch me play games in different countries so I'm really thankful."

The youngster says she is rooting for the senior Lionesses team as they continue their World Cup campaign and hopes to play alongside them one day.
