Meet the Merseyside mum who created her own award-winning nappy cream loved by celebrities

A Bromborough mum who created her own vegan nappy cream for her daughter has gone on to gain celebrity fans as well as winning recognition from Dragon's Den star Theo Paphitis.

Julie Ashworth is the creator of Mummy's Magic Nappy Care Spray, which is loved by celebrities including Danielle Lloyd and sold in local shops across the North West.

For 56-year-old Julie, it all started back in 1999 when she was trying to find a product to soothe her daughter Lauren's nappy rash.

Nothing she tried seemed to work, with shop-bought products and creams from the doctor only making the rash worse. Julie decided to take matters into her own hands and create her own home made remedy.

She said: "I was a qualified aromatherapist and make-up artist at the time. I used my experience as an aromatherapist and made my own product.

"I set to work in my kitchen, mixed my aromatherapy oils, shea butter, rosewater, aloe and a few old wives tales. I made it in a non-touch spray bottle and it worked. She slept for the first time in days and it cleared up in no time.

"I always had some mummy's magic made up. I made it up for family and friends when they needed it too, we used to call it 'Mummy's Magic Spray' and say 'mummy makes it better' when we sprayed it on her. The words just stuck and they are now trademarked to the product."

"Then in 2010 our little surprise, Ellen, arrived and Mummy's Magic was made up again. I used it at every nappy change and Ellen never once got a rash. Chickenpox was a breeze too - it helped the itch and she was scar free."

After seeing the success of Mummy's Magic on her daughters and with friends and family, Julie was inspired to take her idea to the next level.

Julie said: "I contacted a baby buyer at a well-known supermarket who loved it. She came back to me with a plan to get it into production and put me in touch with people to help and we began clinical trials.

"Word of mouth soon spread, our Instagram grew to over 10,000 followers and we managed to get noticed by some North West celebrities including Danielle Lloyd. The product is now available on Amazon, Dayrize and Ankorstore, as well as in many local stores including Babylicious in Hoylake and Village Herbarium in Bromborough.

"The product isn't just for babies - we have pet ducks and it even works for their wounds!"

Julie is now enjoying seeing her business thrive and has even won awards for her product. She is now looking to the future and hoping to grow the Mummy's Magic range further.

She said: "We are beyond proud to say that our little bottle of magic was awarded the 'best vegan nappy spray' award at the Mother and Baby Awards 2021. We were recently one of Theo Paphitis' Small Business Sunday winners which has given us a massive boost.

"I am so excited for the future of the brand. Our future goal is to extend the range. I make a lot of other chemical free skin, body and hair products for parents, babies and even pets. I hope to see them on shelves alongside our nappy spray."
