Meet the magnet fishers who sparked a bomb squad response after pulling a WW2 shell from a canal

This is the moment magnet fishers sparked a bomb squad response after pulling a Second World War ammunition shell from a canal.

The Bridgewater Canal, just off Chester Road in Stretford , Trafford was taped off for several hours while the bullet-shaped ammo was examined by explosive experts.

They were called to the scene by police at around 2.30pm on Sunday.

The shell was later destroyed in a controlled explosion at nearby Turn Moss Playing Fields.

Friends David Jones and Jason Godwin were the magnet fishers who made the discovery.

"I was only supposed to be out for an hour," David joked.

"We started fishing near the bridge - you find better stuff there because people drop stuff from the bridge - and I started pulling out bits of bike, the usual stuff, and the next thing I pulled out this bullet.

"Jason ran over and said, 'that doesn't look right', so I put it down carefully and we realised it was an ammunition round."

Police were called and a cordon was put in place.

The pair, from Urmston, also fished a second 'suspicious item' from the water. Officers at the scene told the Manchester Evening News it was just a large magnet, but David and Jason believe otherwise.

"It looked very much like a mine," David, 26, added.

"It didn't stick to anything and loads of people have got in touch after seeing the photos saying that's what it was.

"An officer who turned up when we called police thought it was as well."

It's understood both items were destroyed in the controlled explosion.

Jason, 24, said it was the find they've had so far. He added: "You felt like you'd won a million pounds pulling it up.

"I just couldn't believe it. I've been fishing in that canal since I was about seven and you just don't imagine finding things like that in the water.

"We've found knives and stuff before, we normally just take them to police.

"There's been safety deposit boxes and a few of our mates have found things like sawn-off shotguns elsewhere in Trafford, but this is the best thing we've found."

David and Jason run the Manchester Magnet Men Facebook page and regularly share images of their finds online.

They decided to set it up after attracting such a big interest when out and about fishing.

David said: "People seem fascinated by it, they come up to us and ask us about what we're doing and what we've found. The kids are really intrigued by it all so we'd like to try and raise some money to buy some more magnets so other people can come along and join us on when we go out."
