Meet the Leeds couple who ditched buying a house to explore England on a canal boat

At the start of the first lockdown, many of us had to come to terms with the fact we'd be looking at the same four walls for the foreseeable future.

But one Leeds couple have had a truly different experience during the pandemic after swapping bricks for boat in 2019.

Adam Lind, 27 and Lauren Coley, 28, bought their new home - a canal boat - in April 2019 and after spending a few months renovating, were able to jump aboard for a wholly different lockdown life come 2020.

The two met whilst studying in Leeds, and after spending seven years there, couldn't resist the travel bug any longer.

Spending five years travelling to 35 different countries, the pair eventually decided they wanted to spend more time exploring England.

After buying the boat for £38,000, the pair took out a loan which means they only need to pay back £500 a month.

Along with using solar panels, and the boat's battery, the pair have no other expenses, and due to their jewellery making, are able to stay afloat.

Adam said: "We bought the boat and headed to Leicester where Lauren's dad helped us with the renovating - we pay less per month than we would if we were renting.

"We wanted to be as eco-friendly as possible, so we began with stripping out the bathroom and creating a compostable toilet and getting a solar panel working.

"We gave the boat a new coat of paint.

"Now we're on our way to Hebden Bridge, but we're stopping off in Leeds so we can visit our friends.

"When we thought about getting a house there was no obvious place we wanted to live.

"We had friends in Leeds, family in Leicester and London - it was an impossible choice but this way means we get to travel."

Now the two say they could never imagine living near roads again.

Adam added: "Whilst there's never a quiet day, we're always busy doing something for the boat, we get to put down the backpacks whilst still exploring the countryside.

"And we've thought ahead.

"We've met so many people on our adventures, and we've seen families too.

"So when the time comes, we'd be happy to raise a family on a boat.

"Right now, we have a smaller boat but we could expand to a bigger boat and we truly do feel blessed.

"We're definitely planning on having a good few years more on this boat.

"I'm starting a podcast talking to other people on the canals and helping to raise awareness of mental health.

"We've dedicated an Instagram to showing our lifestyle. "

The pair are on their way to Yorkshire, and can be found on their Instagram page.
