Meet the Irishman who helped Max Verstappen and Red Bull to Formula 1 victory over Lewis Hamilton

An Irishman was a major part of Red Bull and Max Verstappen's F1 title win on Sunday.

Michael Manning, from Innishannon in Cork, is the F1 team's Trackside Control Engineer, reports Cork Beo.

Michael said his "key area of responsibility is the configuration and calibration of the ECU on the car, which is the onboard computer."

"We use that to control the gearbox, the clutch, and the differential for both optimising gear shifts and also launch performance."

For anyone who doesn't understand the F1 racing lingo, it means his role is absolutely crucial to Max Verstappen coming home in a quicker time than title rival Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes!

Michael studied engineering at Cork Institute of Technology and went straight into Eddie Jordan's F1 team set-up just one year after graduating from college

He landed his first position with Jordan, but he'd only get to work with owner Eddie for about a week due to the Midland Group's purchase of the team prior to the 2005 season.

The Innishannon man - who has been with Red Bull Racing for 11 years - has been working in racing since 2005, and counts Jordan Grand Prix, Team Lotus and Force India F1 as former employers.

The Red Bull team were likely to have been celebrating well into the night, with the possibility of similar happening over 7,500 kilometres away - in Kilmore, Innishannon.

Verstappen won his first Formula One title with an incredible last-lap victory in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix yesterday.

In the winner-takes-all race, the Red Bull driver finished ahead of Lewis Hamilton to seize the lead.

Winning in Formula One requires more than just a great driver, and Cork's own Michael Manning had a massive role in Red Bull's historic win on Sunday evening.
