Meet the Irishman climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest within his 5km for charity

Meet the Irishman attempting to climb the equivalent of the seven highest peaks in the world and all within his 5km.

Alan O' Riordan from Templemore, Co Tipperary is attempting this challenge by scaling the equivalent of each of the seven highest peaks in the world.

He will do this by climbing the Devil's Bit Mountain, which is located within his 5km, the required number of times to equal the heights of the peaks.

For example, Alan will have to climb the Devil's Bit Mountain 18.5 times in one day in order to complete Mount Everest.

He is taking up this challenge to raise much needed funds for his two chosen charities, Aoibheann's Pink Tie and Barretstown.

So far Alan has managed too raise over 6,500 euro and has completed Mount Vinson, Mount Elbrus, Puncak Jaya and Kilimanjaro.

Speaking to the Irish Daily Mirror Alan explained how he just wanted to get involved in something 'crazy' to raise money for charity:

"Last year during lockdown i had a spur of the moment idea to run 500km within the month and managed to raise 6,000 euro for Pieta House.

"This year I wanted to do something for charity again but thought to myself the more crazy, the better.

"Obviously we are all in lockdown and can't travel outside our 5km but luckily for me the Devil's Bit Mountain is only down the road.

"This gave me the idea of the 'seven summits' challenge.

"At first everyone thought i was crazy, it takes about 40 minutes to climb the mountain so to climb the equivalent of Everest it could take close to 24 hours.

"Everybody at home and in the community has been extremely supportive, one of the lads in my bubble has even come to do the first few climbs with me."

Alan also wanted to do this challenge not only to push himself and his body but to convey a positive mental health message.

He added: "My motivation and goals during lockdown has been to stay active and also to be mentally positive.

"I like to keep my social media posts positive when talking about the challenge.

"I'm a very positive person and there's always going to be people who are going through very difficult things.

"That's what i think about if my body is getting sore, the children that I am fundraising for a lot of them are going through a lot more than what I am. They're going up much steeper hills than me.

"I just have to suck it up and just do it because I know it's for a good cause."
