Meet the inspiring young man who turned his life around after becoming homeless to be a single dad

Despite becoming homeless as a teenager, this Sunderland man has managed to turn his life around.

Luke Anderson was just 16 when he became homeless but still went on to complete his exams at school.

Thanks to the support of Centrepoint - a charity that supports homeless young people - he was able to keep a roof over his head.

Now aged 22, Luke is looking forward to moving into a permanent home with his young daughter.

He said: "I was thrust out into the big world. I managed to get help from Centrepoint and managed to get my GCSEs at school.

"It was hard. I would not change it because I would not be the person I was if that had not happened."

Luke then got his own flat but when he was 21 found himself needing the support of Centrepoint again.

Living in a one bedroom bedsit, Luke was fighting for custody of his daughter.

"I ended up back at the Centrepoint young parents' service and then I ended up winning custody of my daughter," he said

At the moment, Luke and his daughter are living at a Centrepoint home in Sunderland and is the first single father to be supported by the service.

Luke hopes they will have their very first permanent home together very soon.

"Now I am waiting to get a small home for me and my daughter. It will be our first home," he said. "It will be a bit closer to family to support me. It is exciting."

Now Luke has won the Inspiration Award at the annual Centrepoint Awards, which recognise the accomplishments of six young people who have been helped by the charity.

Luke travelled to London for the event that was hosted by the Voice of the X Factor, Peter Dickson, and hosted in London's Century Club.

He said: "It was overwhelming. I'm just doing what any other father would do.

"I went down to London. I was the last person to win the award and was sitting next to five other young people who have talked about what they have overcame."

Seyi Obakin, CEO of Centrepoint, said they are proud of all the achievements of all of the young people nominated for the awards.

He added: "They have shown great strength of character to overcome the obstacles in their paths, despite their different experiences of homelessness.

"As the rate of youth homelessness continue to climb, it’s crucial that we help even more young people tap into the resources they need early on to feel safe and transform their lives for the better."
