Meet the heroic Edinburgh teachers and staff who have gone above and beyond to keep kids and parents safe

Before lockdown was even announced, Gracemount Primary School was beginning to see changes in the local community.

With the attendance of children beginning to drop due to families self-isolating with coronavirus symptoms, the school began to wonder just how a lockdown might affect those in the community who are most vulnerable.

Head Teacher Greg Dimeck and his colleagues hatched a plan with his colleagues to send children away with more than just schoolwork.

The school launched Lunch Stop - a daily service which helps everyone from vulnerable families, to children who just want the normality of being able to see their teacher.

Lunch Stop operates from Gracemount Primary Schools car park and the service provides everything from lunch, dinner and stationery to friendly advice.

What was launched to serve the children of Gracemount Primary has since "snowballed" into a service which has benefitted everyone in the local community.

Head Teacher Greg Dimeck told Edinburgh Live: "A few days before the lockdown, Social Bite gave us 100 packed lunches.

"We knew that we had kids on free school meals in Edinburgh and worried about how a lockdown might affect them and their family.

"What started as lunches from the car park soon snowballed into us providing jotters and school work, along with dinners and teaching resources."

Greg has been proud of the way his teachers have volunteered their time to look after the stall and the children they teach.

He said: "Our teachers have gone above and beyond to help the children who attend the school.

"They will call up families who are struggling for a chat, that personable approach means families don't feel so isolated.

"Just having a phone call from a friendly voice can mean so much to parents right now."

Lunch Stop is now benefiting more than just the local community serving anyone in Edinburgh who may need help in this tough time.

Greg added: " Between 10.30 and 11.30 we see everyone from nurses, to people collecting food for the most vulnerable, to children from five other Edinburgh schools.

"We have a really good relationship with the foodbank in Southouse and want people to feel they can come to us.

"People have donated gazebos so we can work come rain or shine and Cyrenians are providing hot meals"

Gracemount Primary school is operating Lunch Stop for Edinburgh and the local community between 11.30 and 12.30.

They will soon be launching a Just Giving Page and would be grateful for any financial or food donations.
