The deadline for the Follow the Farmer contest is fast approaching and you need to submit your entry by December 19 to be in the running for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit and learn from farmers in Costa Rica or a forest community in Mexico. If you need a little extra motivation to prepare your submission here it is: two famous environment writers have agreed to judge the entries.

Andrew Revkin

Andrew C Revkin is a prize-winning journalist and author who has written extensively on the destruction the Amazonian rainforest, the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami and climate change at the North Pole. He was the first New York Times reporter to file stories from the North Pole, and he also broke stories about the Bush administration’s interference with scientific research, particularly at Nasa. Revkin has written books on the Arctic, the Amazon and global warming. He is senior fellow for environmental understanding at the Pace Academy for Applied Environmental Studies at Pace University in New York, as well as a songwriter and musician. Two films have been based on his work: Rock Star (Warner Brothers, 2001) and The Burning Season (HBO, 1994), which starred Raul Julia and won two Emmy Awards and three Golden Globes.

Danielle Nierenberg

Danielle Nierenberg is president of the food thinktank, Food Tank. An expert on sustainable agriculture and food issues, Nierenberg has written extensively on gender and population, the spread of factory farming in the developing world and innovations in sustainable agriculture. She co-founded Food Tank in 2013 to help build a global community for safe, healthy, and nutritious eating. She has travelled all over the world, meeting with farmers, scientists, policymakers, students, academics and journalists to document what is working to help alleviate hunger and poverty – while protecting the environment.

If you want one of these talented, passionate Earth-minded writers to read your entrance essay, then check out how to make your submission. You will also be able to learn more about the amazing adventures contest winners will enjoy. And don’t forget, the deadline is coming up in about one week, so get cracking on that essay.
