Meet the Co Fermanagh couple who live on a barge on Lough Erne

Living on a barge was something Mark Mulholland had always aspired to do.

And when he met his wife Angela, they decided to make it happen.

Angela, aged 57, was a nurse, while Mark, 53, had his own film company. They met in their home city of Belfast - ironically in offices on the harbour estate where the Titanic was built.

"It was meant to be," Mark said.

Speaking to Mark on a sunny Friday afternoon, retiring on a barge on Lough Erne certainly did sound like the life.

He said: "Where I'm sitting now, my back garden is literally a beautiful, big lake. All I can see is islands, mountains and birds.

"But if we want to, within a couple of hours, we can sail right into the heart of Enniskillen. We can literally moor right beside Asda and go shopping."

Asked whether he initially had any worries about taking to life on the water, Mark said: "There's always fear of the unknown. There's a lot of practicalities that have to be overcome.

"But we sort of went with the momentum of the dream. Once we decided that's what we wanted to do - we never really looked back.

"And thankfully, after three years, we still haven't looked back. It's been fantastic."

Granted, there are many advantages to floating your way through locations - “If you don't like your neighbours, you can move on” - but issues can crop up too.

Learning to drive your own house, for one, can be a challenge.

"Touch wood I haven't hit anybody or done any damage," Mark joked. "I'm very proud of that fact."

There are endless reasons why the couple love their life on 'Nola', named after a landlady who had once given Mark a hot water bottle to take back to his boat as a child on a cold October night, who they later reunited with to become lifelong friends.

But what exactly is the best part?

According to Mark, it’s "getting to know the local community”.

"Because the people here are absolutely amazing,” he said.

“They're so unique. They're great fun. They're very giving and very humble people.

"We still never tire of the views, the scenery and the natural beauty of Fermanagh. It's absolutely gorgeous. We've learnt a lot in the last three years about living on the lakes. And about ourselves, about each other. Some of the wonders of the world are here. It's just absolutely phenomenal.

"It's an experience that'll never tire, and I hope that I have enough health to enjoy it for many, many more years to come."

He added: " Fermanagh is our home."
