Meet the adorable donkeys at sanctuary an hour away from Nottingham

A donkey sanctuary located just an hour away from Nottingham over the Derbyshire border in the Peak District has opened to the general public. The sanctuary, which is home to 35 donkeys, is located six miles south of Buxton.

It isn't normally open to the public, and the sanctuary provides a home to a small number of donkeys, some of whom are elderly and have long-term medical conditions, reports Derbyshire Live. Other fit and healthy donkeys brought into the centre are put forward to be rehomed with a Donkey Guardian on The Donkey Sanctuary’s Rehoming Scheme – provided they are considered suitable.

The sanctuary has been holding a free open day on Sunday (April 3), giving people the chance to meet the resident donkeys and chat to staff and volunteers about their work. Refreshments will be available, including a barbeque and hot drinks, while the gift shop will have a host of donkey-inspired gifts for sale.

Speaking before opening to the public, Chris Pile, centre manager at The Donkey Sanctuary Derbyshire, said: “We are really looking forward to inviting visitors to our first open day of the year. Our donkeys love meeting people, and enjoy all the extra fuss and attention they receive.”

The centre’s open day takes place this between 10am and 3pm. All proceeds support the work of The Donkey Sanctuary. The Derbyshire sanctuary is located on the A515 Ashbourne Road near the Bull i’ th’ Thorn Inn, six miles south of Buxton and for more information visit the Donkey Sanctuary website here.
