Meet South Gloucestershire's longest-serving poppy seller

For 76 years a woman has braved November's chilly temperatures to sell poppies for our country's fallen heroes.

Margaret Bracey - or Poppy Girl as she is better known - started selling the Remembrance Day emblem when she was just 12 years old.

She normally hits the streets around two weeks before November 11, and during the last decade has been stationed at Sainsbury's in Coalpit Heath.

Her mum arranged for her to start the volunteer job when Margaret had just started secondary school.

Margaret, of Coalpit Heath, then witnessed first-hand the amazing effect the money had on ex-servicemen when she worked as a case officer in South Gloucestershire.

She helped struggling former soldiers find accommodation and claim electric wheelchairs.

"I see lots of them as I'm walking around," said Margaret, now aged 88.

"They don't remember my name so they just call me Poppy Girl.

"I've never stopped selling poppies because they still need our help.

"What some of them have been through is terrible. They come back with their legs blown off - they might have their lives saved but it's very difficult for them to come back and lead a normal life.

"A lot of them are traumatised."

Margaret's great uncle was killed a day after landing in Normandy during the D-Day battle and her uncle was killed in Burma in 1940.

"It's nice to be able to help in whatever way I can," said Margaret.

"I have no plans of stopping any time soon."
