Meet people with a passion for life this weekend

Advocate for Tibet: Refugee Venerable Bagdro, a monk who calls Newcastle home. Picture: Marina Neil

Venerable Bagdro is quite likely Newcastle's most visible refugee. With rich maroon robes and orange shirts, he stands out in a crowd.

He's a character, and people almost seem drawn to him, whether he's walking along Newcastle Beach, or enjoying a toastie at a Mayfield cafe. Jim Kellar digs a little deeper into Bagdro's life in the Weekender cover story on Saturday.

You will also find a great read on Noni Hazlehurst, as Lisa Rockman talks to her about life at age 67, ahead of her fronting a documentary on SBS about ageism.

Unique birdhouse: Built by Rode and Stephanie Vella at Wollombi. Picture: Josh Bruce

Plus, Alex Morris writes about a cool birdhouse in Wollombi, built by Stephanie and Rode Vella; Josh Leeson catches up with three beer brewers; Bradley Perrett's Hunter Essay covers population growth and Jade Lazarevic talks to the guys behind Poke Lane cafe.

A legend: Noni Hazlehurst leads a doco on ageing.
