Meerut-Bijnor bridge washed away, commute affected

BIJNOR: The approach road to 800-meter-long bridge that joins Meerut's Hastinapur to Bijnor's Chandpur was washed away in Chandpur region on Wednesday due to soil erosion. No casualty was reported.

The road had suffered partial damage on the Meerut's side a few days ago and the repair works were on when the other side to the 18-month-old structure got washed away.

An engineering team led by professor ML Kansal from IIT Roorkee and PWD’s executive engineer SK Singh rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. Singh said, “We are waiting for the water level to recede to begin repair works. We were already working on the damaged portion but all efforts have gone in vain. River’s current washed away all sacks of the sand.” The bridge connected Bijnor’s Chandpur, Amroha, Gajraula etc with Hastinapur and Meerut, making daily commute convenient for the villagers. It was constructed two years ago and opened for commuters last year.
