Medowie crash 'will significantly impact peak hour travel': police

A WOMAN has been taken to hospital under police escort in a critical condition after a Port Stephens crash.

Port Stephens-Hunter Police District police and emergency services were called to Medowie Road near Ringwood Road about midday after reports of a single-vehicle crash.

The female driver, who was the vehicle's only occupant, was trapped in the wreckage.

Emergency services released her from the crash before she was taken to hospital.

Police said at 4pm on Wednesday that Medowie Road remained shut between the Pacific Highway and Ringwood Road.

"It's expected the road will be closed for several hours which will significantly impact peak hour travel," NSW Police said in a statement.

A crime scene is in place and inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000

Separately, the Westpac rescue helicopter is en route to Clarence Town after reports a man has been accidentally shot in the ead with a nail gun.
