A major incident simulation was being held today as medics tested their ability to cope with a helicopter crashing into Westfield shopping centre.

Up to 500 staff at the Royal London hospital in Whitechapel were involved in the exercise, believed to be the largest ever held by the NHS.

Up to 60 “casualties” were involved.

Each was being represented by a cardboard box, containing details of the patient’s medical history and injuries.

The test also focused on dealing with relatives and the mental effects on staff.

Consultant Rosel Tallach said such tests could be just as stressful as the real thing.
