Chiang Mai's health authorities are warning the public about the spread of a dengue fever. So far, 741 infections have been reported this year.
Phuriwat Chokekerd, a provincial health official, said Chiang Mai saw 741 cases between Jan 1 and Aug 25. Of this number, 216 were reported in Muang district. Most of those who were infected were aged 15-24 years.
Mr Phuriwat said that health officials have alerted local authorities about the spread of the mosquito-borne infection so that they can take the proper measures. This includes sending out fogging teams to get rid of mosquitoes and eradicating larvae.
In Chom Thong district, local officials and health volunteers have already been dispatched to villages to get rid of mosquito larvae and to encourage residents to keep areas near their houses free of stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed.
It is reported that in Dong Yen village in tambon Ban Paeh, six people were infected with the virus, which triggered widespread concerns about a possible outbreak.
Dengue symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, nausea and a rash.
