Medical Worker and Husband Killed in Theater ‘Incident’ in Wuhan

What’s new: Two people have died in an incident at a theater in Wuhan, the city where Covid-19 was first reported and was hit hardest in China by the virus.

According to a statement issued late Thursday by the emergency management bureau of Wuchang district, the incident occurred during a performance at the Han Show theater on the evening of Sept. 6.

Multiple Chinese media outlets reported Friday that the deceased are a nurse who previously treated patients on the frontlines of the city’s Covid-19 epidemic, and her husband. The circumstances of their deaths have not been made clear.

Authorities and businesses have laid on a number of services to thank the city’s medical workers. According to the Han Show’s website, tickets for the Sept. 6 performance were free for medical personnel.

On Friday, Dalian Wanda Group, the company that owns the theater, issued a statement saying that the cause of the incident was still under investigation and it had reached a compensation settlement with the couple’s families.

The background: Life in Wuhan, where nearly 4,000 people died of Covid-19 earlier this year, has largely returned to normal after the outbreak subsided.
