Medical student from Cardiff admits throwing sulphuric acid at doctor

A medical student from Cardiff has pleaded guilty to throwing sulphuric acid at a doctor.

Milad Rouf, 25, left Dr Rym Alaoui with "life-changing injuries" following a doorstep attack at her home in Brighton on May 20.

Sussex Police responded to a report of a substance being thrown over the victim in the doorway of a property in Steine Gardens at around 4.20pm.

Dr Alaoui was taken to the Royal Sussex Hospital, where she works, to receive treatment for injuries to her face and chest.

Rouf, of Newport Road, Roath, appeared at Lewes Crown Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to applying a corrosive fluid with intent.

The charge stated the defendant had intended to "burn, maim, disfigure" and cause grievous bodily harm.

Defence barrister Harry McDonald said his client had undergone a psychiatric assessment but asked the court for more time before the defendant was sentenced and for a pre-sentence report to be written.

The Recorder of Brighton and Hove, Judge Christine Laing QC, remanded Rouf in custody to appear for sentencing on October 7.
