Medical emergency declared on board flight landing at Newcastle Airport and paramedics on scene

A plane bound for Newcastle International Airport has been forced to declare an emergency.

The Jet2 flight from Alicante, which landed shortly after 1pm, was met by an ambulance to attend to a passenger who took ill.

The medical emergency happened on the LS584 flight which departed Spain at 11.25.

The flight declared an emergency in mid-air above the airport just 1pm and it landed 1.17pm.

Air traffic control allowed the flight to land sooner than scheduled to let medical help to get on board.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 13.02 to respond to a medical incident on a plane at Newcastle International Airport.

"We dispatched a double-crewed ambulance.

"Paramedics are still on the scene at the moment."

A spokesperson for Jet2 said: “Our crew requested priority landing due to a customer requiring medical attention”.

Newcastle Airport has been contacted for comment.

Medical crews are still at the scene.
