A medical consultant at Harefield hospital, one of the UK’s leading heart transplant centres, has been suspended following an allegation of sexual assault by a member of staff.
The hospital, which is part of the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS foundation trust, has confirmed that it has launched an investigation after a formal complaint was made by a colleague.
A trust spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a member of staff at Harefield hospital has made a formal complaint about a colleague and that, in line with trust policy, an immediate investigation was launched and is still under way.
“The member of staff against whom the complaint was made has been excluded from work until the investigation has been completed. We do not feel it is appropriate to comment further at this stage.”
Harefield, in Hillingdon, west London, has carried out about 3,000 transplant operations since the first was performed by Sir Magdi Yacoub in 1980. It specialises in heart and lung transplants.
A Metropolitan police spokesman said he was not aware of any complaints.
