Medical centre left with 'no choice' but to delay flu jabs

A medical centre in Southport was left with "no choice" but to delay flu jabs being rolled out.

St Mark's Medical Centre on Derby Road in Southport sent out texts to patients stating that they have had to delay their roll out of the flu jab due to a shortage of HGV drivers.

The text said: "Dear patient,

"Due to a national shortage of HGV drivers, our vaccine supplier is unable to meet the delivery date for our walk-in flu clinics this weekend and so we are left with no choice but to postpone this until further notice.

"Once we have a confirmation from the supplier, we will let you know of the dates. We apologise for the inconvenience.

"Best wishes, St Mark's Medical Centre."

One patient, Andy Berry, 55, told the ECHO : "I had a major heart attack about 12 years ago and I'm on a lot of medication, mainly preventative, but I can't afford to come down with the flu.

"I'm like a lot of people in similar positions and there are people in a lot worse positions than me who need to get the jab as well."

He added: "It's in the back of my mind. If I was to get the flu it could affect me big time."

St Mark's is one of many medical centres across the area to suffer with delays.

Ainsdale Medical Centre also posted on their Facebook that they are experiencing similar issues.

They wrote: "We still haven't received a firm delivery date for our adult flu vaccines yet due to 'road haulage' issues. We expect them to be here in the next two weeks.

"The surgery had to purchase our flu vaccines 12 months ago to guarantee stock for this year's programme. We purchased enough for everyone.

"We would therefore welcome all our patients aged 65 or over to support the surgery and come along to our "pop-up/walk-in" clinics at Ainsdale Methodist Church.

"We will contact all eligible patients by SMS message or letter as soon as we have a confirmed delivery date.

"The clinics will run over the first Saturday and Sunday after the vaccines are delivered and you wont need to book an appointment."
