Medical and dental techs and nurses feel most exposed to coronavirus, CSO survey finds

Medical technicians, dental technicians and dental nurses think they have been most exposed to Covid-19 during the pandemic, a new poll reveals.

Nurses, midwives, doctors, carers, dentists, radiographers, vets and paramedics also rated themselves as having the highest risk of catching the killer bug during their working day.

Dentists, paramedics and physiotherapists say they are in closest daily contact with other people at work, according to the Central Statistics Office survey.

In a shock finding, retail workers feel they are at low risk of exposure to the disease despite their daily interactions with the public.

They make up one of the nation’s two largest occupation groups along with farmers, who also reported feeling at low risk of exposure.

Meanwhile primary and nursery teachers rated themselves as having a higher exposure to Covid-19 than their secondary school counterparts.

Sewing machinists, merchandisers and window dressers, conference organisers and computer programmers saw themselves as being least at risk of catching the virus during lockdown.

Artists, farm machine operators, marketing professionals and legal workers reported having least daily contact with others at work.

Our analysis of the research shows women workers made up 64% of the 10 most at-risk groups while 35% were male.

Just 22% of those working in the most exposed professions were over 55, while 12% were non-Irish nationals.
