Medic with hantavirus symptoms being treated in London hospital

  • A medic from Ascension Island, exhibiting hantavirus symptoms, is currently receiving specialist care at a London hospital.
  • Nine British individuals from St Helena and Ascension Island, potentially exposed to hantavirus but asymptomatic, are expected to arrive in the UK on Sunday evening.
  • These individuals will complete their self-isolation at Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral, supported by the NHS’s High Consequence Infectious Diseases network.
  • The repatriations are linked to a hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship, which has resulted in 11 reported cases and three fatalities.
  • The UK Health Security Agency has deployed a Public Health Rapid Support Team to the affected overseas territories to assist with testing and infection control.
