MediaGuardian 100 2010: the countdown

It's that time of the year again when we publish the MediaGuardian 100, our annual take on the great and the good - and occasionally not so good – of the media world.

Except this year – the list's 10th – we are doing something slightly different.

The 2010 MediaGuardian 100 put together by our panel will be unveiled over the course of a week, beginning with numbers 100 to 91 today and another 10 places each day over the next four days.

The final 50 will be unveiled next Monday in the MediaGuardian print section and online, when we will publish the list in its entirety and look back at the year in media and 10 years in the life of the MediaGuardian 100.

Your comments are most welcome as today we unveil the first 10 of this year's list.

As we say elsewhere, it is not intended as a definitive list, but rather as a starting point for debate.

We begin at the bottom, and a global media phenomenon that began in the UK a year before the MediaGuardian 100: Big Brother.
