Media giant Sky opening its first offices in Cardiff for hundreds of staff

Sky UK is investing in its first offices in Cardiff that will house hundreds of staff at the Capital Quarter scheme in the centre of the city.

The subscription TV broadcaster to broadband internet provider, has signed up to 40,000 sq ft of space at the soon to be completed No 4 Capital Quarter office building at the Capital Quarter scheme.

It has entered into a 15 year lease agreement on the second, third and fourth floors of the speculative and grade A office building from developer JR Smart.

The space has the capacity for Sky to employ around 500 staff, where it will provide customer service and sales functions.

It follows a similar model which saw Sky opening a new office in Leeds last year, including bringing some previously outsourced roles to third party providers in-house.

The building, which extends to nearly 97,000 sq ft, is scheduled for completion later this month.  Sky will then begin the fitout of its new offices space. It is expected to move in during the summer.

No 4 Capital Quarter, along with the wider 10 acre Capital Quarter scheme on Tyndall Street, is being marketed for JR Smart by the Cardiff office of international property advisory firm Knight Frank.

Last year law firm Geldards announced a new headquarters in the city by signing up to more than 30,000 sq ft at No 4 Capital Quarter on a 10 year lease.

Another big office deal for Cardiff with Geldards investing in a new HQ

Mark Sutton, partner at the Cardiff office of Knight Frank said: “We are delighted to welcome Sky to Cardiff and to Capital Quarter, which is now becoming home to some of Wales’ most prominent occupiers.

"No 4 Capital Quarter is the only new grade A office building being delivered in Cardiff this year and we have received a huge amount of interest in this space from a wide range of potential occupiers.”

"The Sky letting comes after Admiral signed up to take nearly 70,000 sq ft at the adjoining No 3 Capital Quarter office scheme last November. With consumer organisation Which? already in occupation, No 3 Capital Quarter is now fully let.

Alexander Smart, of JR Smart said: “We have delivered 176,000 sq ft of speculatively developed offices to Cardiff within the past year.

"High quality offices in an urban campus environment provide an attractive proposition for businesses wanting to reside in the heart of the city, and a strong line up of existing Cardiff businesses and inward occupiers have now chosen Capital Quarter to base their operations in the capital.

”It has been a great 12 months at Capital Quarter, which is testament to the commitment and hard work of the whole Capital Quarter development team -  including our professional advisers and sub-contractors, who I would personally like to thank.”

Other occupiers at Capital Quarter include Public Health Wales, Opus Energy, Atkins, Lambert Smith Hampton, Finance Wales, Alert Logic, WSP-Parsons Brinckerhoff, Network Rail, and Home Office.
