Medal winner rounds off Paralympic celebrations at EK school

An East Kilbride school ended their Paralympic celebrations in style on Friday with an award ceremony and a medal-winning guest speaker.

Aileen Neilson, from Strathaven, won a bronze medal in Sochi 2014 and went along to the school's assemblies.

A week of events at the Additional Support Needs (ASN) school began with a grand opening ceremony allowing the children to showcase their banners and flags which they had been working on in class.

The children also took part in a variety of sports throughout the week including archery, boccia, water polo and cycling to name a few.

They also attended the athletics track at the John Wright Sports Centre where they took place in a 400m race, with all the staff participating too. They also had the opportunity to try sports such as javelin, shot put and the long jump.

And to round-off the celebrations, the school was delighted to welcome Aileen.

Pamela Walker, a principle teacher, told Lanarkshire Live : "Aileen brought along her medal to show the children and they were in awe of her achievement.

"Some children even got to participate in curling themselves with the support of Aileen.

"She was an inspirational speaker and shared her mantra of ‘Wish it, Dream it, Do it’ which links perfectly to the school values: Dream, Believe, Achieve."
