Mecole Hardman made small piece of draft history for Chiefs

Name something better than making history for your new team before you’ve even put on a jersey. Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman knows the feeling because he’s already made some modern-era NFL history for his new team.

According to the Chiefs’ official fact sheet on the second round, they had never made a modern-era NFL draft selection at pick No. 56 before Friday night.

Prior to the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the Chiefs made two picks at No. 56 overall. One of those players was a kicker named Charlie Gogolak in the 1966 AFL draft. (Gogolak was the No. 6 overall pick in the NFL draft that year and never played for the Chiefs.) The other player was Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Bobby Bell, who was the No. 56 overall pick in the 1963 AFL draft out of Minnesota. Bell happens to be the only play ever selected at No. 56 overall to ever be elected to the Hall of Fame.

That’s some really cool history for the rookie to be involved in. Hopefully it won’t be the last piece of history that he makes with the Chiefs.
