Mecole Hardman, Chiefs player, forgets winning Super Bowl moments after catch

NFL: Super Bowl LVIII-San Francisco 49ers at Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs' victory in Sunday night's Super Bowl will forever be etched in the memories of their fans, but for Mecole Hardman, the hero of the game-winning touchdown, the moment was a complete blur. Speaking to reporters after the team's 25-22 triumph, Hardman admitted that he was too stunned to realize what had just taken place.

Hardman, 25, confessed, 'I blacked out, man. I forgot we actually won the game.' The surprising hero of the Chiefs didn't even celebrate his catch initially. As he hauled in the three-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Mahomes himself had to break the news to Hardman when he ran over to join the celebration.

Recounting the incident, Mahomes, 28, shared, 'I threw a touchdown to this dude to end the game, and he looked at me. He had no idea. I said, 'Dude, we just won the Super Bowl.' He had no idea. He didn't even celebrate at the beginning.'

During an appearance on the Today show the following morning, Hardman humorously reflected on the experience. 'I don't remember none of it,' he said. 'When I caught the pass, I blacked out for a second. I guess the magnitude of the moment got to me. All I remember is Pat running to me like, 'You're a champion!' And I'm like, 'Oh! We won? Bet!' But I don't remember nothing after I caught the ball.'

Speaking to Today hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie, Hardman described his season as a 'rollercoaster' of emotions leading up to the Super Bowl. After spending his first four NFL seasons with the Chiefs and winning two Super Bowl titles, he was traded to the New York Jets at the beginning of the season. However, he struggled with just one reception in five games and was ultimately traded back to the Chiefs, where he gradually regained his form just in time for the playoffs. The game-winning catch in the Super Bowl was his first touchdown since 2022.

Despite the ups and downs throughout the year, Hardman expressed his satisfaction with the storybook ending. He told Today, 'It feels great. It's an indescribable feeling.' The rollercoaster journey had culminated in a moment of triumph, and Hardman wouldn't have had it any other way.

In the end, Mecole Hardman's momentary lapse of realization was overshadowed by the joy of becoming a Super Bowl champion. His journey from uncertainty to triumph serves as a poignant reminder that success often comes to those who persevere through adversity. As for Hardman, his forgetfulness in the face of victory will be forever ingrained in Super Bowl lore, adding yet another layer to the legacy of the Kansas City Chiefs' championship triumph.
