If you're the type to keep tabs on the latest news in the video game space, you've probably heard of "Meccha Chameleon" by now.
The game, which was released on June 10, had already sold over 10 million copies with zero marketing, according to IGN, making it a surprise hit title of 2026.
Does this milestone mean the game is worth playing?
'Meccha Chameleon'
Developed and published by Japanese video game developers Lemorion_1224 and Haganeiro, "Meccha Chameleon" is a multiplayer party game that gives a creative twist to the classic hide-and-seek.
In this game, you get to be the one who seeks or the one who hides. If you're the seeker, you must find everyone hiding before the time is up, just like the classic game.
The twist comes when it's your turn to hide. Your character in the game has a plain white body, and in order to hide, you have to paint yourself so that you can match your surroundings and blend in.
While this is a multiplayer game, which means you have the option to play with people you know, you can also opt to just play by yourself.

What Do the Critics Say?
As mentioned, this game has sold over 10 million copies less than a month after its release. But do the critics love the game?
The PC Gamer review gives "Meccha Chameleon" an 82% rating.
"Even if you didn't also spend your preteen years filling middle school notebooks with drawings of dragons and orcs, it's an approachable introduction to the satisfaction of creative visual problem solving," the review states. "That's what art is, after all—and 'Meccha Chameleon' is a great lesson in how little it takes to start enjoying it."
Game8 (via Metacritic) has given the game of a score of 86, noting that "Its low price point, paired with endless community mod support, can even draw in non-gamers because it's such a low-risk purchase that's well worth gifting to friends on a boring Friday night."
'Very Positive' Reviews on Steam
As of writing, "Meccha Chameleon" has over 40,000 user reviews on Steam, which the platform has categorized as "Very Positive."
"The entire experience is a beautiful disaster," Wgd2009 said in a Steam review. "You'll be blending into what you think is the best spot ever and as soon as you know it you'll be completely hot pink because of a misclick. It turns a simple game of hide and seek into a full-blown art project."
"The game itself is fun to play, but the menu design and all the in-game bugs completely ruin the experience," user angry oil slick. noted in a separate review. "We literally have to leave the game and rejoin just to invite friends."
