Meath man writes brilliant poem about return of pubs as thousands celebrate reopening

An Irishman's special ode to the pubs has been applauded after thousands of people celebrated the return of outdoor hospitality yesterday.

Waves of people have returned to work at bars, restaurants, cafés, gyms, swimming pools, leisure centres, cinemas, theatres and more.

There were queues outside some of the most popular spots in Dublin yesterday morning as people savoured their first pint in six months or longer.

And Ashbourne native Daragh Curran, also known as the 'Guinness Guru', was one of those.

Pre-lockdown, he would travel around Ireland reviewing pubs and - more importantly - how their pints of Guinness were, as well as hosting the OnlyCans podcast

Curran was one of the many that went to Grogans yesterday morning for that first sup - and it inspired him to upload a brilliant poem to the GuinnessGuru page afterwards entitled 'Bacon Fries'.

The piece of prose has already been viewed over 10,500 times on Instagram since being uploaded last night.

People were quick to praise him in the comments.

"Excellent lad. As good if not better then many a Guinness commercial" with another saying the piece "would bring a tear to a glass eye"

Meanwhile, a top publican joked that he'd "never seen so many selfies with pints of Guinness" as he shared his joy at welcoming customers back.

Alan Campbell said that it "just great" to have punters back in his bar, The Bankers Bar, adding that he thinks it had created a "sense of positivity and goodwill" around Dublin city centre.

"It's great, there's a great buzz around the city this morning. It was great watching all the people sitting down for food and drinks," he said.

"I just went up to the lads in Grogans to wish them luck there and they're flying up there too. South William Street is doing very good.

"We have a great crowd outside as well, they've been there since we started. It's early days but great to see."
