Meath blow as Mickey Newman to miss entire League campaign

Meath’s hopes of remaining in Division 1 of the Allianz Football League have been dealt a blow with confirmation that Mickey Newman will miss the entire campaign.

The 29-year-old was the Royals’ top scorer when they achieved promotion from Division 2 last year and hit 1-6 in their qualifier win over Clare which secured a Super 8s spot.

But the Kilmainham man will undergo hip surgery today in Dublin and has admitted that he’s facing several months on the sidelines. Seamus Lavin (knee), Padraic Harnan (shoulder), Shane McEntee (back) and Ethan Devine (elbow) all underwent surgery over winter too ahead of Meath’s first top flight campaign since 2006.

Speaking last night, Newman said: “I’m going for a hip operation, a hip arthroscopy. That’ll keep me out for a while. All I can do is concentrate on rehabbing it well and then my focus will be on the Championship.

“It’s not ideal but at least the year isn’t over for me.”
