Meath baker creating cakes this Hallowe’en with range of scary edible art creations

A Meath baker is creating spooktacular cakes this Hallowe’en with a range of scary edible art creations.

A vampire, an evil leprechaun and Morticia are just some of the amazing cakes made by Navan chef Jennifer Moran.

The mum-of-three began painting with cake two years ago and although the frightening feasts are fangtastatic, her favourite is Fr. Jack from Irish-loved comedy Fr Ted.

“I was living in the middle of nowhere at the time and it was kind of a way to entertain myself,” said the 33-year old.

“I started painting on cakes using vodka and food colouring gels. Looking back, the first one was crap but sure I was just delighted with it.

“I started Jen’s Bakey Cakey and I was hosting workshops before Covid-19 but that’s all stopped at the minute so I’m working with artists around the world online to create Hallowe’en cakes.

“It just shows what you can do with edible art and I love it. Making these sculptured cakes is a big thing in the US but it is really taking off in Ireland as well.

“For the Hallowe’en versions, they are chocolate cake with buttercream icing inside but I’ve dyed the icing red and made it a bit thinner so when you cut into it, it looks like runny blood.

“Many people think the cakes are edible and the sculptures - like the vampire - are plastic but they are just edible cake too, made with a bit of work.

“It takes up to four hours to paint the cake and if it has a sculpture, the whole thing can take two days.

“I’ve won a few competitions so far, especially with my Fr Jack cake - everyone seems to love him.

“It’s so satisfying to see people’s reactions to them and after I have baked them, I just give them away to family and friends.”
