Meat eater reviews Greggs' vegan steak bake

A steak bake is a classic Greggs pastry that vegans have been unable to eat... until now.

The UK's largest bakery chain has released their vegan steak bake and many people are excited about it.

But is the 'fake bake' any good? Gloucestershire Live sampled both the regular steak bake and vegan alternative to see if it's worth the hype and this is what they thought.

The vegan steak bake (Gloucestershire Live)

One self-confessed Greggs fan in the office tried both bakes in a blind taste test.

Their verdict? The vegan steak bake is okay if you really wanted to try a meat-free version. However, they added that if they were vegan they would avoid it all together and opt for a healthier snack.

The real steak bake (Gloucestershire Live)

As a carnivore, they will be sticking to the regular steak bake.

What's the vegan steak bake made of?

Greggs teamed up with Quorn (company that produces meat substitutes) to make the vegan snack.

Mycoprotein pieces, diced onions and a rich gravy are encased in a light and crisp vegan pastry.

How much does it cost?

The vegan steak bake costs £1.55, or £1.85 if you wish to eat in.

The original steak bake will cost between £1.45- £1.75 depending on location.
