Meals for MLS players at the Walt Disney World bubble are getting Fyre Fest comparisons

The NBA won’t be the only sports league to hold its season restart at the Walt Disney World bubble in Orlando this summer. In fact, MLS teams are already arriving to their accommodations at the Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort ahead of the MLS is Back Tournament. And players are already voicing concerns about the food.

As part of the safety protocols, the league gave each team a dedicated meal room. And players also have the option to receive meals at their hotel rooms.

The menus for those MLS meal plans actually sounded pretty great with options like “house roasted prime New York strip loin” and “bourbon glazed smoked Virginia ham” appearing on the lunch menu. But players were quick to point out that the $65 lunch (!!!) special didn’t exactly live up to expectations.

I mean, look at what Toronto FC’s Omar Gonzalez had for lunch.

Teammate Eriq Zavaleta ordered the ham, and, well, it didn’t look much better.

A box lunch isn’t the worst meal in the world, sure. But when it’s billed as a $65 meal prepared for a professional athlete, it would be reasonable to expect more than just deli meat, a banana and a couple ounces of potato salad.

Players and fans started to compare the MLS Is Back food to the infamous Fyre Fest.

According to The Athletic, players are not expected to be paying the $65 tab themselves, which would mean the individual clubs are on the hook for the price-gauged deli slices.

Either way, the MLS bubble isn’t off to a great start — and that’s not even considering the league’s 26 positive cases of coronavirus.
