Meadows Edinburgh: Police confirm multiple arrests as the park becomes social hotspot

Edinburgh police have confirmed that a small number of people have been arrested for a variety of different crimes in the Meadows.

Officers been consistently patrolling the Edinburgh park in recent weeks, as the easing of lockdown rules has turned the green area into a huge social space.

Today, police confirmed that a 'small minority' of people have been arrested for crimes committed in the park. Alongside this, a number of fixed penalty fines were also handed out for urinating in public.

A large variety of alcohol has also been confiscated, with the force stating that "unacceptable behaviour won't be tolerated".

In recent weeks, the Meadows has been shrouded in controversy, with a huge rise in the number of incidents concerning littering, drunken and disorderly behaviour and public urination.

Warm weather in June saw thousands of people flock to the park to enjoy meeting up with their friends outdoors. However, images then very quickly showed large groups breaking social distancing rules, with one evening seeing a huge fight breaking out on the grass.

The next day, one group of local residents volunteered to clear up the mounds of rubbish left behind, shaping it into the number 2482 to remember the 2482 people who have lost their lives from coronavirus in Scotland .
