MDA sweeps Meghalaya bypolls

SHILLONG: The ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) snatched two seats from the opposition Congress to make a clean sweep of the three assembly bypolls, the results of which were announced on Tuesday.

Former national footballer and United Democratic Party candidate, Eugeneson Lyngdoh, won the Mawphlang assembly seat that had fallen vacant following the demise of his father SK Sunn, who was an associate member of the UDP, the second largest constituent of the ruling coalition.

NPP candidate Abdus Saleh won the Rajabala seat by 1,927 votes defeating his Congress rival candidate Hashina Yasmin Mondal, widow of Azad Zaman of Congress, whose death had necessitated the bypoll.

NPP candidate Pyniaid Sing Syiem won the bypoll to the Mawryngkneng seat, which had fallen vacant due to the demise of legislator David Nongrum of Congress.
