McRae family get a special corner of Knockhill as their own

BOSSES at Scotland’s top motorsport venue are celebrating 40 years of links with the famous McRae rallying family – with a special naming ceremony.

Knockhill chiefs have decided a sharp right-hand corner at the bottom of the challenging Duffus Dip section of the track that turns on to the loose rallycross stage should be known as McRae’s.

It will be called that at all rally and rallycross events and was chosen as the perfect spot to carry the illustrious family name as it combines the two disciplines of rallying and racing.

Five-time British Rally Championship winner Jimmy McRae said the family were delighted by the gesture – Knockhill having featured in much of their sporting activities.

And when the McRae Rally Challenge returns to the venue on July 2-3, there will be an official ribbon cutting ceremony with all the McRae family and members of the Knockhill team.

Knockhill managing director Jillian Shedden said: “We are all thrilled and honoured that the family have approved the naming of the corner after all the successes and contribution that Jimmy, Colin and Alister have achieved in their rallying careers.

“All have competed at Knockhill, stretching back almost four decades with Jimmy, and we will have the third generation, Max McRae, here, with his dad and grandad, all taking part in the McRae Rally Challenge.

“No other family has achieved so much and they have put Scotland on the rallying map worldwide.”
