McMadness as panic burger buyers cause huge tailbacks as they queue to get final McDonald's

Fast food fans caused tailbacks across the country on Monday as they queued to get a McDonald's before the restaurants closed their doors.

Hungry customers in Glasgow, Wishaw and Paisley were spotted queuing round the block to get their fix of their favourite meal ahead of the shutdown caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

The fast food giant announced its restaurants would close their doors from 7pm today, as the country tries to limit the spread of the deadly COVID-19 strain.

A statement issued on Sunday by the restaurant chain – which has more than 1300 stores and employs 135,000 workers in the UK - confirmed they will close by 7pm today.

And the news saw scores of hungry customers rushing to their local branch - while observing the government's advice on social distancing.

By staying in their cars, they kept up the advised 2m gap between themselves and other punters.

Paul Pomroy, Chief Executive Officer of McDonald’s UK & Ireland said of the shutdown: "It has become clear that maintaining safe social distancing whilst operating busy takeaway and Drive Thru restaurants is increasingly difficult and therefore we have taken the decision to close every restaurant in the UK and Ireland.

"I have been clear throughout this that we would only continue to operate whilst it was safe for our people and together with our franchisees, we feel now is the time to make this decision to temporarily close.

"We will be working closely with community groups across the UK and Ireland to distribute food from our restaurants to those most in need.

"I want to thank every single one of our 135,000 employees. I am so proud of them all for adapting so quickly to a constantly evolving work environment, taking every step to keep our customers, couriers and teams safe and looking after each other so very well.

"We will continue to update you thorough our website, social media channels and email alerts in the coming weeks but in the meantime we thank you for your continued support and custom."
