Conor McGregor suffered a serious leg injury that led to a second successive defeat against Dustin Poirier in the main event at UFC 264 on Saturday night.
The Irishman sustained an awful suspected fracture to his left leg during the closing stages of the first round of the hugely anticipated trilogy fight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
McGregor’s ankle completely collapsed underneath him in grizzly fashion and bent horribly as he stumbled backwards following a missed strike with just seconds left before the horn, with UFC president Dana White subsequently confirming a break to “the lower tibia in his left shin”.
McGregor - who is set to undergo surgery on Sunday morning - was behind on all three judges’ scorecards at the time of the doctor’s stoppage, with Poirier having enjoyed the best of a wild round.
Poirier called McGregor a “dirtbag” as tempers sparked once again after the fight and stated that he thought his rival had first fractured his leg during an earlier exchange.
McGregor’s damaged leg was placed in a protective brace and he was quickly transported from the octagon on a stretcher and away to hospital.
“This is not over,” he yelled in a feisty, somewhat bizarre post-fight interview before exiting, with Poirier now holding a 2-1 lead in their heated rivalry.
“If I have to take it outside, let’s take it outside.”
