McGowan's Black Belt Academy students top medals table at Open Championships

Hamilton's McGowan’s Black Belt Academy topped the medals table at the 21st annual GMS Open Championships at Ravenscraig on Sunday, March 3.

In an outstanding performance, the Burnbank club took 13 gold, nine silvers and 16 bronze medals.

Gold went to Cara Wong (2), Alan Moody, Toby Adam, Naki Ndudzo, Nicole Connor, Rachel Steven, Fiona Cowan, Cameron Reid, Emily Boyd, Eilidh Cowan, Ryan Campbell, Zac Phillips, Cian Healy, Erin McCabe.

Silver was won by Cameron Reid, Dargh Lightbody, Alana Moody (2), Rachel Steven, Erin McCabe, Jack Dobbie, Daniel Longmuir, Ella Wong, Cara Wong, Katie Campbell, Naki Ndudzo.

Those winning bronze were: Eilidh Cowan, Rachel Steven, Connor Dolan, Ewan McLean, Lewis McLean, John Bulloch, Rumzi Ndudzo, James Weston (2), Iain Justice, Iara Amaral, Vince Cunningham, Emma Donaldson, Louie Bonnar, Ryan Byers and Harry McNulty.

Instructor Kieran McGowan said: “The whole club worked really hard in the lead-up to the championships, with many of the competitors also grading during the same weekend.

“It’s nice to see their hard work paying off, and we are really proud of them.

“I would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to our seniors and cadets, who helped coach and prepare the students in the lead-up to the championships, and on the day itself.”
