McGill’s announces £17.5 million investment in all-electric buses

McGill's has invested £17.5m into all-electric buses, ordering 13 from Falkirk bus building company Alexander Dennis, with another 22 being fulfilled by Pelican Yutong from Castleford, West Yorkshire.

The investment will comprise 23 single deck buses for the company’s Johnstone to Glasgow route and 12 electric double deck buses for Xplore Dundee.

The firm acquired Xplore Dundee from National Express in December for an undisclosed sum.

McGill’s will also install new electrical charging infrastructure for its depots in Johnstone and Dundee.

The Greenock-based business is also in advanced talks to bring in 12 Hydrogen buses into the business in the next 12 months.

This latest investment brings the total capital put into the firm since 2014 to more than £50m – around £40m of which has been spent on new vehicles.

Ralph Roberts, chief executive at McGill’s Group, said: “We are confident that bus users will enjoy the silence and comfort, safe in the knowledge that their already low-emission journeys are now zero emission at the point of use, with the benefits that brings for air quality and the environment.”

James Easdale, one of the owners of McGill’s, said: “The last 18 months has seen Sandy and I announce construction projects worth more than £400m as well as the planned £20m redevelopment of the Watt Brothers store in Glasgow.
